What Is a Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator is an online tool that calculates how much gratuity to add to a bill based on a selected percentage.

For example, if your restaurant bill is $100 and you choose a 20% tip, the calculated tip is $20, making the total bill $120.

Our calculator can also divide the total between multiple people. This makes it useful as both a tip percentage calculator and a split bill calculator.

You can choose a common percentage such as 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25%, or enter a custom tip percentage based on the service and your preference.

Tipping practices can differ based on service type, location, restaurant policies, service charges, and personal preference. Calculator results are mathematical estimates and do not determine what you are required to tip.

You can also explore our Financial Calculators for tax, loan, interest, and other everyday money calculations.

How the Tip Calculator Works

The calculation starts with your bill amount and selected tip percentage.

Tip Formula

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)

Total Bill Formula

Total Bill = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

Amount Per Person

When multiple people are splitting the bill:

Amount Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People

Worked Example

Suppose your restaurant bill is:

Bill Amount: $150
Tip Percentage: 20%
Number of People: 3

Step 1: Calculate the Tip

$150 × 20% = $30

Step 2: Calculate the Total

$150 + $30 = $180

Step 3: Split the Bill

$180 ÷ 3 = $60 per person

The estimated result would be:

Tip: $30
Total Bill: $180
Per Person: $60

How to Use the Tip Calculator

Using our tip calculator with split bill takes only a few seconds.

1. Enter the Bill Amount

Enter the amount shown on your bill before adding a tip.

For example:

$85.50

2. Choose a Tip Percentage

Select one of the available percentages:

10% · 15% · 18% · 20% · 25%

You can also enter a different percentage if required.

3. Enter the Number of People

If you are splitting the bill, enter how many people will share the total.

For example:

4 people

4. View Your Results

The calculator can show:

  • Tip amount
  • Total bill after tip
  • Tip per person
  • Total amount per person

How Much Should You Tip in the U.S.?

There is no single tip percentage that applies to every U.S. service or situation. The amount people choose to tip can depend on the type and quality of service, location, restaurant policy, and whether a gratuity or service charge has already been included.

For restaurant calculations, percentages such as 15%, 18%, and 20% are commonly used as quick reference options. Some people may choose a lower or higher percentage depending on the circumstances.

Before adding a tip, check your receipt to see whether an automatic gratuity or service charge has already been included, especially for larger groups.

Use the calculator to compare different percentages rather than treating any percentage as a mandatory amount.

15%, 18%, and 20% Tip Examples

For a $100 bill:

15% Tip
Tip: $15
Total: $115

For a $100 bill:

18% Tip
Tip: $18
Total: $118

For a $100 bill:

20% Tip
Tip: $20
Total: $120

For a $50 bill:

15% Tip: $7.50
18% Tip: $9.00
20% Tip: $10.00

How to Calculate a Tip Without a Calculator

Calculate a 10% Tip

Move the decimal point one place to the left.

Example:

$80 → $8

Calculate a 15% Tip

Calculate 10% plus half of that amount.

Example:

$80 → $8 + $4 = $12

Calculate a 20% Tip

Calculate 10% and double it.

Example:

$80 → $8 × 2 = $16

How to Split a Restaurant Bill

If everyone is sharing the bill equally, calculate the total including tip and divide it by the number of people.

Example:

Bill: $200
20% Tip: $40
Total: $240
People: 4

$240 ÷ 4 = $60 per person

If each person ordered significantly different amounts, an equal split may not reflect each person’s actual share. In that case, calculate individual subtotals separately.

Core Assumptions

  • Tip percentage is applied to the bill amount entered.
  • The entered bill amount is assumed to be the amount on which the user wants to calculate gratuity.
  • Bill splitting assumes an equal division among all people.
  • Percentages are converted to decimal form before calculation.
  • Currency values are rounded to standard cents.
  • No automatic service charge is added unless it is already included in the bill amount entered.

System Limitations

  • The calculator does not determine an appropriate or required gratuity.
  • Restaurant policies and automatic gratuities may vary.
  • Taxes may be included or excluded from the bill amount depending on what the user enters.
  • Service charges are not automatically detected.
  • Unequal bill splitting is not calculated unless supported separately.
  • Tipping customs can differ by location and service type.
  • Results are for informational and planning purposes.

Tip Before or After Tax?

Should You Calculate a Tip Before or After Sales Tax?

People may calculate tips differently. Some calculate gratuity based on the pre-tax subtotal, while others use the final amount including sales tax.

Your calculator does not need to prescribe one method. Instead, enter whichever bill amount you want the percentage applied to.

For example, if you want to calculate the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that amount. If you prefer to calculate it from the final bill, enter the tax-inclusive amount.

This approach keeps the tip percentage calculator flexible for different preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Calculators

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage expressed as a decimal. For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 0.20 = $10.

A 20% tip equals one-fifth of the bill amount. On a $100 bill, a 20% tip is $20. On a $75 bill, it is $15.

Multiply the bill by 0.18. For example, an 18% tip on a $100 bill is $18.

Multiply the bill amount by 0.15. A 15% tip on an $80 bill is $12.

First calculate the tip and add it to the original bill. Then divide the total amount by the number of people sharing the bill.

There is no single calculation method everyone uses. Some people calculate tips using the pre-tax subtotal, while others use the final bill. Enter the amount you prefer into the calculator.

Yes. Enter the number of people sharing the bill to estimate an equal amount per person after the tip is added.

The calculator applies the selected percentage to the bill amount you enter. If your entered amount already includes sales tax, the tip will be calculated from that amount.

Tipping amounts vary by service, location, restaurant policy, and personal preference. Percentages such as 15%, 18%, and 20% are commonly used as reference options, but users should choose an amount appropriate to their situation.

Check the receipt for terms such as gratuity, service charge, automatic gratuity, or service fee before adding another tip.
