What Is a Sales Tax Calculator?

A sales tax calculator is an online tool that estimates the amount of sales tax added to the purchase price of taxable goods or services.

To calculate sales tax, enter the price before tax and the applicable sales tax rate. The calculator determines the tax amount and adds it to the original price to provide an estimated total purchase price.

For example, if an item costs $100 and the applicable sales tax rate is 8%, the estimated sales tax is $8, making the total price $108.

Our U.S. sales tax calculator also supports reverse calculations. If you already know the final price including tax, the tool can estimate how much of the total represents sales tax and what the original pre-tax price was.

Because sales tax rates and taxable items can differ between states, counties, and cities, calculator results should be treated as estimates and verified with the relevant state or local tax authority when accuracy is required. The IRS also notes that local tax rates can differ even within ZIP code areas.

You can also explore our Financial Calculators for other loan, interest, tax, and everyday money calculations.

How the Sales Tax Calculator Works

Tax Amount = Purchase Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100)

For more information about the formulas, assumptions, and rounding used across My Panda Tools, review our Calculation Methodology.

Add Sales Tax

To calculate sales tax on a pre-tax purchase:

Sales Tax = Pre-Tax Price × (Sales Tax Rate ÷ 100)

Then:

Total Price = Pre-Tax Price + Sales Tax

Example

Purchase price: $149.99
Sales tax rate: 8.25%

Sales Tax:
$149.99 × 0.0825 = $12.37

Total Price:
$149.99 + $12.37 = $162.36

How Reverse Sales Tax Works

A reverse sales tax calculator works backward from the final tax-inclusive price.

Pre Tax Price Formula

Pre Tax Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + Sales Tax Rate ÷ 100)

Sales Tax Amount

Sales Tax = Total Price − Pre-Tax Price

Example

Suppose the total price is $108 and the sales tax rate is 8%.

Pre-Tax Price:
$108 ÷ 1.08 = $100

Sales Tax:
$108 − $100 = $8

This feature is useful when a receipt or displayed amount includes tax but you need to determine the original price.

How Sales Tax Works in the United States

Sales tax in the United States is primarily imposed at the state and local level, rather than as one nationwide retail sales tax rate.

As of mid 2026, 45 states levy a statewide sales tax and 38 states permit local sales taxes. Rates can therefore differ substantially depending on where a purchase is made.

States With No Statewide Sales Tax

The five states with no statewide sales tax are:

  • Alaska
  • Delaware
  • Montana
  • New Hampshire
  • Oregon

However, Alaska allows local governments to impose sales taxes, so a purchase in Alaska may still be subject to a local rate.

For this reason, selecting only a state may not always provide the exact tax charged at checkout.

State Sales Tax vs. Local Sales Tax

A state sales tax rate is imposed at the state level.

A local sales tax may be added by a:

  • City
  • County
  • Municipality
  • Special taxing district

The actual rate charged on a purchase can therefore be a combined state and local sales tax rate.

For example, a state might impose a 6% rate while a local jurisdiction adds another percentage. The buyer could therefore pay a combined rate higher than the state’s base rate.

Your sales tax calculator by state should clearly identify whether its preset represents:

State rate only

or

Estimated combined state and local rate

I recommend that your dropdown say:

U.S. State Base Rate (Optional)

instead of simply:

US State Preset

This is more accurate if you are only storing statewide rates.

How to Use the U.S. Sales Tax Calculator

1. Choose a Calculation Mode

Select:

Add Sales Tax to calculate tax from a pre-tax purchase price.

or

Reverse Sales Tax to calculate the original price from a tax-inclusive total.

2. Enter the Purchase Price

Enter the dollar amount of your purchase.

For example:

$250

3. Choose a U.S. State Preset

Select a state if you want to use the available state-level rate.

Because local sales taxes may also apply, verify the exact rate for your city or county when necessary.

4. Enter or Adjust the Sales Tax Rate

If you already know the combined tax rate, enter it directly for a more location-specific estimate.

5. View Your Results

The calculator will display the estimated:

Pre-tax price
Sales tax amount
Total price after tax

What Determines the Sales Tax You Pay?

State

Each state establishes its own sales tax rules and rates.

City and County

Local governments may impose additional sales taxes in many states.

Type of Purchase

Not every product or service receives identical tax treatment. Groceries, prescription medicines, clothing, digital products, and services can be taxed differently depending on the jurisdiction.

If you are calculating taxes and financing costs for a vehicle purchase, use our Auto Loan Calculator to estimate monthly payments, sales tax, fees, and the amount financed.

Purchase Location

The applicable tax can depend on where a sale occurs or, particularly for remote transactions, the relevant sourcing rules.

Tax Exemptions

Certain purchasers or transactions may qualify for exemptions under applicable state or local law.

Core Assumptions

  • The entered tax rate applies to the full taxable purchase amount.
  • The calculator uses a single combined percentage rate.
  • Calculations are rounded to standard currency values.
  • State presets represent the rate identified by the calculator.
  • The entire entered purchase amount is assumed taxable.
  • Reverse calculations assume the entered total includes sales tax at one stated rate.

System Limitations

  • Local city and county rates may differ from state base rates.
  • Sales tax rates can change over time.
  • Product specific exemptions are not automatically determined.
  • Tax holidays may not be reflected.
  • Special district taxes may not be included.
  • Marketplace and online transaction rules may vary.
  • The calculator does not determine whether a transaction is legally taxable.
  • Results are estimates and are not tax or legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sales Tax

Multiply the pre-tax purchase price by the sales tax percentage expressed as a decimal. For example, an 8% tax on a $100 purchase is $100 × 0.08 = $8, producing a total price of $108.

Calculate the tax amount and add it to the original price. You can also multiply the original price by 1 + the tax rate expressed as a decimal.

Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 + the sales tax rate expressed as a decimal. Subtract the resulting pre-tax price from the total to determine the sales tax amount.

There is no single U.S. sales tax rate. Sales taxes are imposed primarily by state and local governments, so the applicable rate depends on the location and transaction.

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska nevertheless permits local governments to impose local sales taxes.

Yes. Many U.S. states allow cities, counties, or other local jurisdictions to impose additional sales taxes, which can make the combined rate higher than the state’s base rate.

No. Taxability depends on the state, jurisdiction, product, or service. Some jurisdictions exempt or apply different rules to categories such as groceries, medicines, clothing, or certain services.

Yes. A sales tax calculator by state can use a statewide rate as a starting point. However, additional city, county, or district taxes may apply, so the exact checkout rate can differ.

Yes, if you know the applicable sales tax rate. However, online sales tax treatment can depend on transaction and sourcing rules, so use the rate actually applicable to your purchase.

A sales tax calculator accurately performs the mathematical calculation based on the price and rate entered. The final real-world tax can differ if the applicable rate, exemptions, local taxes, or taxable amount differs from your inputs.
