Use our free Grade Calculator to estimate your weighted course grade from homework, quizzes, exams, projects, participation, and other grading categories. Enter each category’s weight and your score to calculate your current weighted average.

This weighted grade calculator is useful for U.S. high school, college, and university students who want to track academic performance, understand how course categories affect their grade, or estimate their standing before a final exam.

What Is a Grade Calculator?

A grade calculator is an online tool that combines scores from multiple course categories according to their assigned percentage weights.

For example, a class might use the following grading structure:

  • Homework: 20%
  • Quizzes: 20%
  • Midterm Exam: 25%
  • Final Exam: 25%
  • Participation: 10%

Each category contributes differently to the overall course grade because each category has a different weight.

If you earn 90% in a category worth 20% of the course, that category contributes:

90 × 0.20 = 18 percentage points

A grade calculator with weights performs these calculations automatically, making it easier to estimate your current or final class grade.

Grading policies vary by school, instructor, and course, so always compare your estimate with the grading policy in your syllabus.

How the Grade Calculator Works

The calculator multiplies each category score by its percentage weight.

Weighted Grade Formula

Weighted Contribution = Score × (Weight ÷ 100)

When all course weights total 100%:

Final Grade = Σ [Score × (Weight ÷ 100)]

If the entered categories do not total 100%, a normalized weighted average can be calculated as:

Current Weighted Average = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)

This distinction is important for your current calculator.

Worked Example

Suppose a student’s class grades are:

CategoryWeightScore
Homework20%90%
Quizzes15%85%
Midterm25%80%
Projects15%95%
Final Exam25%88%

Homework

90 × 0.20 = 18.00

Quizzes

85 × 0.15 = 12.75

Midterm

80 × 0.25 = 20.00

Projects

95 × 0.15 = 14.25

Final Exam

88 × 0.25 = 22.00

Final Weighted Grade

18 + 12.75 + 20 + 14.25 + 22 = 87.00%

Estimated course grade:

87%

How to Use the Grade Calculator

1. Enter a Category Name

Enter the name of the grading category.

Examples:

Homework
Quizzes
Midterm Exam
Final Exam
Projects

The category name helps organize your calculation but does not affect the mathematical result.

2. Enter the Category Weight

Enter how much the category counts toward the course grade.

For example:

Homework = 25%

3. Enter Your Score

Enter your percentage score for that category.

For example:

88%

4. Add Additional Categories

Click Add Category and repeat the process for each graded component.

5. View Your Grade Estimate

The calculator combines your entered scores and weights to estimate your weighted grade.

Once you know your current course grade, use our Final Grade Calculator to determine the score you need on your final exam to reach a target grade.

Why Grade Weights Matter

Course categories often have different effects on your overall grade.

For example:

An assignment worth 5% of the course has less impact than an exam worth 30%.

Suppose you earn:

90% on homework worth 10%

Contribution:

90 × 0.10 = 9 points

But if you earn the same 90% on an exam worth 30%:

90 × 0.30 = 27 points

This is why a weighted grade calculator provides a more useful estimate than simply averaging every score equally.

What If My Category Weights Do Not Equal 100%?

If all grading categories have been entered, their weights will commonly total 100%.

However, students may want to calculate a current grade before all categories have been completed.

For example:

Homework: 25%
Quizzes: 20%
Midterm: 25%

Total entered weight:

70%

In this situation, a normalized current grade calculator can calculate your average using only the completed 70% of the course.

If your tool simply adds weighted contributions without normalization, the result instead represents how many percentage points the entered work currently contributes toward the full course grade.

Important Tool Check

Isliye ensure karein ke result clearly identify kare:

Current Weighted Grade

agar total entered weight 100% se less ho.

Aur jab weights exactly 100% hon:

Ye wording calculator ko technically zyada accurate banayegi.

Weighted Grade vs. Simple Average

A simple average treats every score equally.

For example:

80%, 90%, 100%

Simple average:

(80 + 90 + 100) ÷ 3 = 90%

A weighted average gives some scores more influence than others.

If those scores have weights of 20%, 30%, and 50%:

80 × 0.20 + 90 × 0.30 + 100 × 0.50

16 + 27 + 50 = 93%

The weighted grade is therefore:

93%

This is why students should use a weighted average grade calculator when their syllabus assigns different percentages to categories.

Common Grade Categories

U.S. courses may calculate grades using categories such as:

  • Homework
  • Assignments
  • Quizzes
  • Exams
  • Midterms
  • Final exams
  • Projects
  • Labs
  • Essays
  • Participation
  • Attendance

The percentages assigned to these categories vary by instructor and institution.

Always use the weights listed in your official syllabus or course grading policy.

Percentage Grade and Letter Grade

Your calculator currently produces a percentage grade.

Schools may convert percentage scores into letter grades such as:

A, B, C, D, or F

However, there is no universal percentage-to-letter-grade scale used by every U.S. school.

For example, one institution may define 90% as an A, while another course may use a different grading threshold.

For this reason, the calculator should provide the percentage result and avoid automatically claiming a specific letter grade unless the grading scale can be customized or is clearly disclosed.

How to Calculate Your Grade Manually

To calculate a weighted course grade manually:

  1. Convert each weight percentage to decimal form.
  2. Multiply each score by its decimal weight.
  3. Repeat for every category.
  4. Add all weighted contributions.
  5. If the weights total 100%, the sum is your estimated final percentage.
  6. If only part of the course is entered, normalize by the total entered weight when calculating a current average.

Example

Homework:

92 × 0.20 = 18.4

Exam:

85 × 0.30 = 25.5

Project:

90 × 0.50 = 45

Total:

18.4 + 25.5 + 45 = 88.9%

Estimated weighted grade:

88.9%

Frequently Asked Questions About Grade Calculations

Multiply each category score by its percentage weight and add the weighted results together. If all weights total 100%, the result is your estimated overall course percentage.

Use the formula Score × Weight for each category, with the weight converted to decimal form. Add all weighted contributions to calculate the overall grade.

A weighted grade gives different assignments or categories different levels of importance. For example, a final exam worth 30% affects your grade more than homework worth 10%.

Enter only completed grading categories and their assigned weights. A current grade calculator can normalize the completed categories to estimate your current weighted average.

If some course categories have not yet been completed, the entered weights may total less than 100%. In that case, calculate a normalized current average or add the remaining categories before estimating a final course grade.

An assignment worth 20% contributes up to 20 percentage points toward the final course grade. Your actual contribution depends on your score.

A final exam worth 30% represents nearly one-third of the weighted course grade, so changes in the exam score can significantly affect the final result.

Not necessarily. A simple average gives equal importance to every score, while a weighted average accounts for the percentage value assigned to each category.

Yes. The college grade calculator can estimate weighted grades when you know each category’s score and percentage weight. Use the grading weights provided in your course syllabus.

No. The result is an estimate based on the information entered. Your instructor or institution determines your official grade according to its grading policies.
